For those who do not know, Tramadol represents an opioid-based analgesic, or painkiller. This particular drug is usually prescribed by physicians in order to treat moderate to severe pain. Generally, it is considered a safer alternative, especially when compared to other narcotic analgesics such as Vicodin, Lortab or methadone.

The medicine was originally approved by the US Food and Drug Administration Agency, also known as the FDA, for use by the public, back in 1995. At that moment in time, they also recommended the drug to not be classified as a controlled substance. However, in the last couple of years, there have been several reports of abuse in the general public, alongside with reports showing the appearance of withdrawal symptoms after complete cessation from the drug. Back in 2014, the Drug Enforcement Administration, also known as the DEA, decided to publish a couple of revised rules, thus making tramadol a federally controlled drug, by ranking it as a schedule IV.

This is mostly due to the fact that upon being taken orally, in its pill form, the liver proceeds to metabolize the substance into several chemicals, one of which produces considerably more potent effects when compared to tramadol. This represents the main reason why, when taking a higher doses, the drug can actually produce a euphoric high. This has encouraged more and more people to take the drug recreationally, rather than for its painkilling effects.

What symptoms can Tramadol abuse provoke?

With this in mind, people that abuse Tramadol can have a higher risk of seizures and convulsions. Not only this, but other side effects such as nausea, constipation, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadness and vomiting can also appear.

Most of the times, these side effects can represent signals of abuse, especially for those that take Tramadol recreationally. Not only this, but abusing the substance can also lead to drug-toleration and dependence, thus encouraging people to take more of the medicine.

At this moment in time, scientists have determined that the drug can provoke both a psychological and physical dependence. Those suffering from the psychological addiction can feel compulsive cravings to take the medicine in order to cope with the problems that they deal with every day. Not taking it can cause anxiety, but also physical effects such as miosis, slow breathing, cold skin, irregular heartbeat, extreme drowsiness, seizures, loss of consciousness and even coma.

What is the Tramadol abuse treatment like?

The addiction treatment is quite similar to that of other opioids. With this in mind, following the process of detoxifications, patients may be required to undergo extensive care, and attend therapy sessions.

    How do I avoid addiction?

The best way to avoid Tramadol addiction is to only take the pill if your doctor has recommended it. During your treatment, make sure to take your doses on time, and to follow all direction written on the prescription label and forwarded by your physician.
