    Description

Tenormin is a prescription drug which was first approved by the FDA in 1981. It is rather useful in such conditions as hypertension or angina and helps to lower the risk of cardiovascular strokes and myocardial infractions. During Tenormin therapy it’s necessary to check the state of a patient on a regular basis to achieve the desired blood pressure level.

    Mechanism of Action

The action of the medicine is determined by its active agent, atenolol. Tenormin belongs to beta-blockers, that is the agent which binds beta one adrenergic receptors selectively in the heart and vascular smooth muscles. Due to the blockage of beta one receptors, sympathetic stimulation is inhibited, which provides a relaxing effect on heart rates, pressure and cardiac output. However, it’s rather important to stick to the prescribed dosage as a huge amount of atenolol in the body may result in beta 2 blockage.

    2. If there is a decision to stop the therapy with Tenormin, it’s forbidden to withdraw abruptly.
    3. Impaired renal function might influence the dosage of the medicine to make it safe for a patient.
    4. Those patients who suffer from diabetes must take Tenormin with caution, as it may mask tachycardia which is a symptom of hypoglycemia.
    5. Breastfeeding women should take the medicine only in case there is a reasonable necessity for taking Tenormin.

    Dosage

The dosage of Tenormin depends on the type of disease and severity of the patient’s condition. The common dose in 50 mg once a day which might be prescribed alone or accompanied by other kinds of therapy. If no sufficient effect appears, the dosage might be increased to 100 mg and even 200 mg once a day in some cases. Elderly people may get lower dosage of Tenormin to avoid adverse reactions.
