    Description

    Pyridium is an oral medication prescribed by doctors to help their patients relieve the symptoms associated with different lower urinary tract infections, such as urinary pain, burning, urgency and frequency. Basically, it’s a popular over-the-counter and prescription medicine that has specific side effects and contraindications that should be considered before starting this treatment. You can find Pyridium as standard oral tablets that come in different strengths, from 95 mg to 200 mg.

    Its Mechanism of Action

    Pyridium is an oral medicine that belongs to a group of drugs called urinary analgesics or pain relievers. If you need higher doses, you need to visit your doctor to get the necessary prescription. If you require lower doses, you can get its over-the-counter version. Most patients take Pyridium to relieve such painful and unpleasant symptoms as urinary urgency, burning, pain, frequency and other associated with specific lower urinary tract infections.

    Actually, its exact mechanism of action is still unclear, but there are certain scientific suggestions that it may provide users with the necessary relief by working as an effective local anesthetic on the urinary tract lining. Pyridium is excreted in the urine, so its intake may cause your urine to become red or orange. This medicine doesn’t have antibacterial actions, so it’s used only to relieve the symptoms associated with lower urinary tract infections, but not to treat them.

    List of Mild and Severe Adverse Effects

    Just like other drugs, Pyridium may result in specific side effects, but the good news is that most of them are mild and rare. For example, some of the most common adverse effects caused by this medication include the following:

    bullet_ball_blue Dizziness and headaches;
    bullet_ball_blue Stomach cramps and allergic reactions.

    If any of them become bothersome, you should call your doctor immediately. In rare cases, patients may experience such serious side effects as:

    bullet_ball_blue Liver injury and kidney failure;
    bullet_ball_blue Hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia.

    If you notice any of these symptoms, you need to go to the hospital as soon as possible.

    General Pyridium Contraindications

    When it comes to possible drug interactions, they have no significant clinical evidence, but it’s still necessary to make a full list of other medications that you’re taking and show it to your doctor to be on a safe side. Include other OTC and prescription pills, vitamins and minerals. Besides, pregnant and breastfeeding female patients should be very careful when using Pyridium because of possible health risks.

    Recommended Doses

    A standard dose of this medication for adult patients is 100-200 mg taken 3 times a day, preferably after regular meals. This treatment shouldn’t be longer than a few days when Pyridium is taken with antibacterial agents. The maximum daily dose of this medication is 600 mg, so you shouldn’t exceed it to avoid ending up with severe side effects.
