Fertomid is a medication that contains clomiphene as its active ingredient, and it’s taken to induce hormones necessary for ovulation. This means that doctors prescribe it to women who aren’t ovulating because of some hormonal imbalance in the body. Nowadays, it’s available in 2 basic doses: 25 mg and 50 mg.

    Common Fertomid Uses

This medicine is taken to treat infertility in women who have different problems conceiving, as their ovaries don’t function properly and prevent them from ovulating without any clear reasons if their partners are fertile. Basically, Fertomid works by restoring the right functions of ovaries, thus, allowing eggs to mature, release and be fertilized. This medication is also prescribed to help women restore a normal menstrual cycle if they have irregular ovulation because of different causes, such as taking oral contraceptives. Sometimes, Fertomid is taken to treat male infertility by improving sperm production of men with low sperm count.

    Mechanism of Action

This medication is a selective estrogen receptor modulator that works by binding to estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, thus, preventing its negative feedback action. When the levels of this hormone are low, the hypothalamus is stimulated to produce more gonadotrophins and release FSH and LH from a pituitary gland. These important hormones are needed for healthy ovulation, and they work by stimulating maturation and growth of eggs in the ovaries. When follicles are matured, they release eggs for further fertilization. The intake of Fertomid tricks the human body into responding as if the levels of estrogen are low, thus, restoring the right balance of hormones and resulting in ovulation. Besides, this medication may result in releasing 2 or more eggs at once, thus, increasing a chance for twins.

    How Fertomid Treats Infertility

This medication is taken to treat infertility in women if this condition is caused by lacking ovulation. That’s because it’s used to increase the production of LH and FSH from a pituitary gland. These hormones are necessary for ovulation, because they stimulate maturation and growth of egg follicles. Fertomid binds to estrogen receptors and restores the right balance of hormones.
