    Exelon is taken by patients to treat dementia or confusion related to such serious conditions as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. However, this medication is not intended to cure them, because it works by improving such annoying symptoms as lack of awareness, memory and ability to do everyday things. The intake of Exelon works by restoring the right balance of specific neurotransmitters in the brain.

    How to Take This Medication Properly

    Patients need to use Exelon orally with their meals twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. The right dosage is based on their individual tolerance and medical condition. To decrease a possible risk of side effects, including diarrhea and nausea, it’s advisable to start this treatment at lower doses that should be gradually increased over 2-4 weeks. The maximum allowed dosage for adult patients is 6 mg, so they shouldn’t increase it.

    Unwanted Exelon Side Effects

    There are certain side effects that can be caused by this medicine, but they are rare, so they don’t affect many patients. For example, they may experience the following mild side effects:

    bullet_ball_blue Sudden weight loss and loss of appetite;
    bullet_ball_blue Vomiting and nausea;
    bullet_ball_blue Unusual weakness and diarrhea;
    bullet_ball_blue Drowsiness and dizziness;
    bullet_ball_blue Tremor and allergic reactions.

    Most of these symptoms are mild, but if any of them persists, you need to let your physician know about it. These side effects may happen because the human body adjusts to the active ingredients of Exelon, and they often stop over time. However, if you experience the following serious adverse reactions, you need to get emergency medical help and stop this treatment:

    bullet_ball_blue Difficult urinating and seizures;
    bullet_ball_blue Severe stomach pain and fainting;
    bullet_ball_blue Vomiting like coffee grounds and irregular heartbeats.

    Basic Exelon Contraindications

    Before you take the first dose of this medicine, tell doctors about any allergic reaction that you have. They also need to know everything about your medical history, especially if you’re diagnosed with lung and breathing issues, intestinal and stomach problems, heart diseases, seizures, fainting, urinating conditions, etc. Sometimes, Exelon may make patients feel drowsy or dizzy, so they aren’t allowed to drive or do other things that require their full attention for safety reasons. They also need to limit the consumption of any alcoholic beverages. Nursing and pregnant women should be careful with this drug.

    Finally, there are some medications that shouldn’t be taken together with Exelon because of possible contraindications that lead to serious health complications and their reduced effectiveness. For instance, don’t combine this medicine with NSAIDs, aspirin, pain relievers, fever reducers and others. Make a full list of all the other pills that you’re taking and show it to your physician. It should include prescription and herbal supplements, even minerals and vitamins.
