    Benadryl is an antihistamine medication, which helps the occurrence of natural chemical histamine in a human’s body. The drug is prescribed to treat the following health problems: sneezing, itching, runny nose, motion sickness, rash, hives, watery eyes, Parkinson’s disease (mild form). Moreover, it may also suppress coughs and induce sleep.
    The medication can be also indicated to treat a number of conditions, not mentioned here.


    Before you start taking the medication, certainly mention your health care specialist about the following:

    bullet_ball_blue Increased eye pressure;
    bullet_ball_blue Stomach ulcer;
    bullet_ball_blue Enlarged prostate;
    bullet_ball_blue Bladder problems;

    If you have any of above-mentioned conditions, you may not be allowed to take Benadryl, or you may be prescribed lower doses and suggested monitoring during the whole period of treatment.

    Benadryl is FDA category B pregnancy drug. It means that it’s not harmful to the fetus. However, if you are pregnant, do not start taking it without your doctor’s advice. The medication can be harmful to an infant during the period of breastfeeding, as infants are more susceptible to antihistamines. If you are older than 60 years old, you are likely to face a number of Benadryl side effects. At this age, you may require a lower dose of the medication.

    How to Take It

    Benadryl should be taken the way your doctor has indicated. If you do not understand some directions, contact your healthcare provider for more detailed information.

    Each dose should be taken with a full glass of water. You can take it with or without any food. Use a special measuring spoon to ensure you take a right amount of the medicine. Never take more drug than you were prescribed. 300 mg is the maximum amount of Benadryl you can administer during a 24-hour period. It’s recommended to be very careful while driving or performing any other activities. It’s not suggested to drink alcohol, as it can enhance drowsiness during the treatment.

    Side Effects

    Common side effects include:

    bullet_ball_blue Dizziness;
    bullet_ball_blue Fatigue;
    bullet_ball_blue Sleepiness;
    bullet_ball_blue Dry mouth;
    bullet_ball_blue Enlarged prostate;
    bullet_ball_blue Problems with urination.

    Stop taking the drug and seek immediate emergency help if you have the following:

    bullet_ball_blue Breathing difficulties;
    bullet_ball_blue Closing of the throat;
    bullet_ball_blue Swollen lips, face or tongue;
    bullet_ball_blue Hives.

    This list of side effects is not complete and many others can occur, depending on your particular health condition.
    If you miss Benadryl dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s already the time for the next one, skip a missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Do not take double dose to cover a missed one. In case of overdose, you are likely to have the following side effects:

    bullet_ball_blue Weakness;
    bullet_ball_blue Insomnia;
    bullet_ball_blue Shaking;
    bullet_ball_blue Fever;
    bullet_ball_blue Ringing in the ears;
    bullet_ball_blue Large pupils;
    bullet_ball_blue Dry mouth;
    bullet_ball_blue Insomnia.

    If you suspect overdose, seek medical advice immediately.
